The seventh house and the Descendant: what you look for in others

At some point you noticed your important relationships resemble each other more than you'd like to admit. Different people, same film.

Astrology has a place where that question gets looked at: the Descendant, which is associated with the seventh house. (Whether it's exactly where that house begins depends on the house system being used.)

What it is

The Descendant is the point exactly opposite the Ascendant: where the ecliptic crosses the western horizon at the moment of birth. If the Ascendant is the edge where the sky was rising, the Descendant is the edge where it was setting.

It forms an axis with the Ascendant: it's across from you, literally.

What gets read there

In psychological astrology, the Descendant is interpreted as a clue about the qualities you look for in other people. Sometimes they're qualities you admire but find hard to recognize or express in yourself. It's a symbolic interpretation, not a proven explanation: it doesn't determine who you choose, and on its own it doesn't explain why a relationship repeats. What it does is pose a question: what are you looking for out there that you could also develop in yourself?

That's why the chapter is called what you seek in others, not what your ideal partner is like. Your ideal partner isn't written in your chart, or in anyone's.

Where it goes next

In the personal book this is a chapter. In the couples book, the reading considers both people's birth data: it's the crossing of two whole charts, which is a different book and a different way of looking — and there's no compatibility percentage there either.

About the birth time

Calculating the Descendant requires your birth date, place and time. If you don't know it, this chapter isn't included in your book: we'd rather leave that part open than invent a precision we don't have.

A chapter about what you look for in others, written as prose and written about you.
